I was pissed off when the fuel light came on at 88 miles. What kind of horrible milage is THAT!

 

I kept looking at the light and willing it to go back off again when I noticed that the odo was stuck on 88 and that needle thingy stayed at zero at different speeds.

 

I guess I don't look at the speedo much...

 

Anybody have the P/N for my busted speedo cable?

I just added a speedo sheath to my growing collection, mines on a lemans so the pn is different but contact MPH (link above and to your left) very good to deal with.

The latest-style cable is a bit tricky to install. Start at the trans end. Position the bend in the lower cable housing away from the centerline of the motorcycle. Then, insert the cable and thread on the retaining collar but do not tighten it all the way. Once the collar is threaded on, start feeding the cable under the throttle body, and then rotate the bend under the throttle body once morst of the cable has been fed through.

 

You want the Type III cable. I can get you the part number when I go to work. Lube it before installation.

Buy an extra while you are at it. That too-angled bend seems to make breaks inevitable.

 

Mine went out at about 900 miles. The replacement lasted about 20K, dying just about halfway on my 2K-miler up to Erie last weekend. Dancing with Ernesto the whole way might not have helped, but I did notice the needle starting to twitch about 200 miles before it clocked out permanently.

 

To my surprise, Joe Eish didn't have one, but he did come up with the exhaust stud, another casualty of the trip, and a few other odds and ends that fell off or otherwise quit. Was even more surprised thyat my local dealer had one. If he had two, I'd buy 'em both.

One more thought, David:

 

If your bke is still under warranty, the cable should be covered.
