Guest Britcheflee Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 I am thinking of splashing out and buying a set of H&B bags and mounts for my Ballabio - they have an option of either 30 or 40L size bags - has anyone here any comments about the size difference? Just would like feedback on if the 40L size are too massive for the bike or not - also any comments on mounting them on the bike - problems? Thank you, Lee

Thank you, Lee 30s and 40s share all dimensions save side-to-side width. The 40s are significantly wider. I use the 30s. The H&B mounts come with a back rack that can hold a bag or a trunk, for when you really need to carry stuff. It is a stout system that can prevent considerable bike damage in a crash. Mine was on the bike when it was totaled in a crash and the bag abosrbed the impact and prevented any damage to the exhaust or rear of the bike. This system makes the bike a really practical daily driver. I pick up and drop off Guzzi engine blocks at the machinist and do all my grocery shopping on my Billy Bob. Plan on a few hours for mounting the bags. Also, they may not work with a high exhaust.
twhitaker Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 I use the 40's on the California and the LeMans. They work great and are nice crash protection. The 30's are not big enough to stow a helmet.

The 30's are not big enough to stow a helmet. On my previous bike (Honda VF1000F) I had 40l krauser bags, they made you feel like driving a truck, but you could easily stow a jacket and helmet. This is very handy when visiting towns during a trip and improves daily use a lot. I must say that driveability is influenced and that I had a lot increased tire wear. (but I was forced to use BT45's, and they are known for that)
rocker59 Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 You'll eventually want both! The 30s are great for around town and short trips, but you'll want the extra capacity of the 40s on longer journeys. The look is so similar that most people, other than you, wouldn't know which size you were running.
Zoom Zoom Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 I agree with Mike. The 30's are good for the everyday stuff, and IMHO, they look better on the bike. In my situation, I can pop the 40's off the EV, (including the top box), and go with them if I feel the need. I know folks do it, but I can't imagine a long trip with the 30's. The practical space of the 40's become much more useful when you're out for two weeks+. I suppose you need to decide what your main purpose will be. Zoom Zoom, John Henry
rocker59 Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 A pic of my bike with the 40s installed. (and a 30 strapped to the seat )
