I JUST LOOKED AT THE MANUAL FOR THE LEMANS ('03) AND IT SIMPLY STATES agip 90w oil for gearbox. What exactly does this mean? I use both 85/140 and 80/90 in my Breva 750. Just wondering what others are using. Can I use an 80/90 or is there such a thing as simply 90W oil? I guess I'm just confused and need clarification on what they mean.

Many here recommend the Redline shockproof brand for the rear drive & transmission. There are so many threads on this subject already that should answer all your questions. Try a search using redline.

However, Redline shockproof doesn't answer my question. I don't want Redline, but would like to know what is meant by 90W. I have done the search and everything keeps coming up Redline. I have 90W gear oil, and am wondering if 80/90 is ok or if there is specifically a 90W only oil. Redline shockproof tells me nothing other than some are using it. I have heard of some using camel piss in their gas tanks because Guzzi will run on anything. I don't think I'll go there either. ;)

That should tell you all you need to know about trans oil. How long has this forum been up? Five, six years? And the ONLY thing we talk about is Redline in the trans. A hell of a lot more than just a few are doing it. Put it in your drive box too!

 

If you're set on it, and have it, and don't want to buy anything else, I'm sure 80/90 will be just fine.

Shockproof is the one thing that many of us who argue all the time, can agree on :beer:

As for the difference between 90W and 80W-90, they will perform about the same once warmed up, but in the first few miles, the multigrade will be significantly thinner and should shift better.

I don't know why they recommend the 90W over the 80W90 :huh2:

But the manual that came with my bike says 90W, while the downloadable manual from Guzzi says 80W-90 :mg:

What I can't figure out is why Redline recommends for Guzzi the shockproof heavy, that they describe as

"can be rated as a 75W250 Gear Oil, but has the lower internal

fluid friction of an SAE 75W90."

instead of the LightWeight, that they describe as,

"can be rated as a 75W140 Gear Oil, but has the lower internal

fluid friction of an SAE 30 motor oil."

Perhaps the can be rated refers to the protection, while the internal fluid friction relates better to how it shifts, reduces friction for better power and fuel mileage, etc.
