Guest Nogbad Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 The clock is it's best feature. It is a well kept secret that Harley was forced to rubber mount the engine. They were paying out far too much in warranty claims. It seems the costly clocks were failing at an alarming rate. The attorneys that ride and design Harleys discovered rubber mounting as an effective fix. The rear fan was added originally for rider comfort. They found it also helped make the rider aware of the elevated temperature at the rear cylinder. The fans self- compensate for the rider's loud pipe induced hearing failure by getting much louder as they age. At two years they actually SQUEAL quite loudly. Simply brilliant. BTW, Do Buells couple the odometer to the trailer or pick up wheel as the other Harleys have done? May be a Screeching Eagle accessory. Great way to rack up mileage! Apocryphal rubbish. I see this thread has fallen victim to the nascent prejudice against Harley / Buell. If you rode a Honda VFR or something, maybe I could understand silly railing against a bit of a peg tingle, or a few rough edges on the design and manufacture of a bike. As a V11 rider though, you are the pot calling the kettle black!

waspp Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 5-03 pm when I left, 5-57 when I returned, 20 minutes late for tea after saying I would be gone for half an hour. However, I have a wife who understands the biking mind and simply reheated my food with a smile. Unlike my ex-wife (from Belfast as it happens) who most likely would have applied a kitchen implement to my head. The severe frontal lobe damage from kitchen implements is another key componet in Harley Buell ownership.
belfastguzzi Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 kitchen implement I thought he was referring to the Buell itself: slow-cooker / crockpot

Unfair yes, but if you understood the manner of crackpot red neck wannabees that are the majority of H.D. ownership in these parts, you would certainly understand. As well, most Buell owners around here are in clear identity crisis, also wear beenie helmets, have big Cuban cigars hanging from their teeth, or wear these outrageous cloth masks with skeletal head markings when it gets cold, and are literally fish out of water when even the slightest curve in the road occurs. They hang almost exclusively with the "Harley" crowd, wear chaps, Daytons, etc. I'm sick of collecting these idiots in the corners on my 35yr old, 35 hp beemer. I could go on and on about the source of this public head shaking toward this ilk. H.D. and Buell are obviously linked in more ways than business, with Buell having H.D. based engines. It's unfortunate that you have a make of motorcycle that has such a tarnished image among other motorcyclists. But you should realize this will happen. I fully understand the scurge of dis-like towards beemers on this forum. I do not get offended, rarely try to defend the brand. I understand that a forum like this, which not only has 1 manufacture as it's base, but goes one step further with one base model as it's base, that all other bikes are fair game to be picked on, and I'll probably join in. So keep your flap jacket on Belfast, it's only natural that we have a go at a Harley Davidson powered bike sold as a sport bike, with a system of engine isolation copied from a 39yr old Norton, using a final drive system from a Maytag clothes dryer, an exhaust off of a 1960's Ford Falcon, equipped with a vibration resistant liquid crystal clock!!! Ciao, Steve

Ciao, Steve Hey hey hey! Lets at least have the facts straight. First, we don't have a rednecks on H-Ds problem in the UK, it's more of a "mild mannered accountants and doctors" on H-Ds problem, and if you never ride to "bikers' haunts" on a Sunday, you never see one anyway. As a Brit, I don't see H-D having a tarnished image at all, unless you count "middle class, mid life crisis 40+" as tarnished. An image Ducati equally suffers. The closest we have to redneck types all tend to be on Jap multis. Second, what scourge of dislike towards Beemers? Ok, there are one or two folk willing to chuck a brickbat in the BMW direction, but conceptually the V11 (or any Guzzi) is pretty close to a BM, the Guzzi just wears a tighter brassiere. If you have a BM fine, it's a good bike too. Third, the Buell IS a sportsbike and can corner and lean as tidily as anything out of the Land of the Rising Sun. The tuned Harley motor suits street riding admirably and at 100 bhp for the Euro spec XB12 does rather better than the V11 on both power and economy. Finally, the "Uniplanar" Buell isolation design is NOTHING like the Norton Isolastic apart from having the same basic purpose. The final drive system is light, clean, relatively efficient, very quiet and completely free of lash. I can't comment on the exhaust as I am not familiar with the Ford Falcon. The clock doesn't need to resist vibration. None gets past the isolation to enter the bars.
DeBenGuzzi Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 I see nothing wrong with Buells and in fact will probably end up with a ulysses at some point I want a nice playful dual sport for a good price BMW makes a nice dual sport but for twice the money(used)
Guest Nogbad Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 "I thought he was referring to the Buell itself: slow-cooker / crockpot" But at least the Buell doesn't seem to need a baking tray in the sump........
Guzzirider Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 The rednecks around here drive cars!! Some UK biker stereotypes: With Harleys, if it is an old one it is likely to be owned by a guy who has ridden bikes all his life and maintains it himself. If its a modern one, HOG poseurs or guys moving off sports bikes wanting to slow down. Sportsters are popular with the ladeeys. Buells tend to be ridden by your Streetfighter types. Dukes- if it is a 999 or 749, either a poseur or a track day addict (tyres either have a huge bitch strip or are frazzled to bits). Monsters- mainly girlies. Hardly see any STs or Multistradas about. Beemers- old men in the IAM, off duty traffic cops or Ewan and Charlie wannabees. Jap sports bikes- huge spectrum of riders who like to go for the norm. This type of bike is the most common in the UK and the best selling big bikes are normally GSXR1000s and the like. Guzzis- mainly tight arsed real ale drinking bearded weirdos. Guy
Richard Posted October 15, 2006 Author Posted October 15, 2006 Guzzis- mainly tight arsed real ale drinking bearded weirdos. I take offence, I don't have a beard....!!! Nogbad & Steve, clam down - I only asked about a clock....
Steve G. Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 I take offence, I don't have a beard....!!! Nogbad & Steve, clam down - I only asked about a clock.... Oh, don't worry, I'm just in a good mood this morning [Rossi is now in the points lead, and I was actually given a motorcycle yesterday], and I'm just trying to press buttons with Belfast, and I get in a better mood when I succeed. BTW, as a Guzzi owner, and enthusiast, I resemble the above comment, except the part about the beard. The itchy part drives me nuts, and I have oh so sensitive girlie skin. But if there's IPA within 10 miles, I can usually find it by my nose!! Ciao, Steve
Guzzirider Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 My reasons for not having a beard are: 1/ I am barely old enough to shave 2/ When I grow one, its ginger! Guy
belfastguzzi Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 My reasons for not having a beard are: 1/ I am barely old enough to shave 2/ When I grow one, its ginger! 3/ You're a lady?
Guzzirider Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 3/ You're a lady? I can be, if the price is right.

As a V11 rider though, you are the pot calling the kettle black! Oh, NO! Every word was serious and TRUE. Not a word in jest. As a former Buell owner and VFR Honda afficianado I am well versed in this subject. Surely however you have neglected responding to the queries regarding the trailer/odometer coupling. My complimentary observations regarding the finer points of the two wheeled Chinese digital clock known as Buell stand. Certainly over here (USA) The HARLEY riders are the main anti-Buell bigots. Of course any one who suggests buying a Buell is somehow the answer to a query regarding fitting a clock to a V11 Sport Moto Guzzi has a bigger problem to deal with than kettles or pots.
