Put the key in my ride this morning and as soon as the starter clicked everything shut off. Battery is good but everything else ..everything..is dead. When the key is turned there is no click from the relays, no lights on dash or running...zero..get it ..Nada. Seeems it may be a main relay or fuse but my wiring diagram is in Italian. Any thoughts???

Pizza Man,

Start with checking the battery, check for voltage and check the battery cables for being tight. I am on my way to work at the moment but will look at the wiring diagram tonight.

Good luck,

Mike

Never assume your ignition switch is good on a Guzzi either. I have had four of their switches go bad on me over the years!

I'm not sure how you wound up with a schematic only in Italian, but I do have a large, color, re-drafted schematic on the web. Since the starter motor is one of three wires that are sourced at the positive battery terminal and the only one WITHOUT a fuse, I'm going to mention several possibilities.

1. The battery is really dead. This seems most likely since you have NO other indications of power. It could be dead in the sense that the internal connections in the battery failed. They seldom do that without a good reason, but it has happened before. A large current draw such as that of the starter motor would be sufficient.

2. The starter motor is bad and starting enabled it to draw so much current that either a battery cable fried or the battery fried.

3. The battery is just completely discharged.

First, check all of the fuses.

Second, pull all of the relays one at a time, and re-insert them into the sockets.

See if anything works, and if not, then disconnect the battery and put it on a charger. When it's charged, take it down to an automotive parts store and have them load test the battery. A simple voltage reading at home may not be enough to determine whether the battery is screwed up or not.

I would check

Fuses (There is only one block of fuses, easy to pull each one and check, but I think you would have to blow more than one to get your symptoms)

Battery connections (they vibrate loose all the time....)

Kill switch (It could have been accidently killed)

Relays (switch them around and see if the symptoms change.)

Thank you everyone for the help! Carl..the schematic was great. It goes in my service stuff.

It turns out to be fuse F5 (15 amp) that was blown. It is listed as a starter relay fuse but look at the schematic. It goes on to feed the "lights relay" (#34) but follow that path and you will see this relay in turn feeds many things including all the indicator lights, horn, a terminal on the ECU and more. My theory..fuse F5 blew because of a very loose positive battery cable (ring terminals were barely touching each other) and when I went to crank perhaps this fuse was forced to carry part of the starter load. Anyway..I tightened the positive terminal and replaced the fuse and all is ok..for now.

Thanks again!

Don'tcha just love those color schematics? It's not a labor of love so much as a symptom of insanity (not really). Glad it helped.
