If I delete my cookies and internet files, do I need to worry about someone checking my hard drive to see what I have looked at on the internet?

Thanks!

Whaddya do??????????

and most likely no, could always run crapcleaner, double check the internet folders and defrag anything deleted isn't truly gone until you write over it or defrag. If your at work you might be boned, they often carboncopy everything you do to their server to check up on you later, but there are limits to how much they can see

No, work is not an issue, just home.

well if its really really bad you could always backup a few things and replace your harddrive and buy a new one  I'm talking treason against the USA kinda bad, if its like enough to be poisned with palonium bad then crush the hardrive, then burn it and scatter the ashes.

I like to take a proactive stance in computer protection (PCs anyway). Zonealarm is either free or pay depending on what you use, and I've found it to be a very effective firewall.

For spyware, if you are worried about it, both Spybot-search and destroy, and Adaware are good and free.

Even if you delete all your cookies, history files, etc., if someone really wants to know what you've been up to, they can get that data off your drive unless you do an overwrite with random 1's and 0's over all the free space. But, that's like Ben says- to get rid of child porn and treason.

no, just email correspondences

I'm not a computer expert, or a lawyer, but if this matter you wish to erase could get you into legal trouble, like divorce court, you might best make it look like an accident and not intentional.

1. Replace hard drive "because it crashed". Maybe there is some software out there that can do this for you.

2. Replace computer because it died. You "accidently" spilled a liter of Diet Coke into the case. Very corrosive stuff.

3. Computer needs to go to the repair shop, cause you accidently shorted the power supply and need a new one. On the way there you: a) are car-jacked by thugs who steal it; or B) throw the computer in a dumpster, make up a reason why it never comes home.

4. The computer needs replacing because it accidently fell down the stairs and broke its neck.

I assume you have been having an affair.

I managed to get caught by my computer literate ex after I failed to properly delete e-mail. There IS also a way of resurrecting deleted files using some software you can easily buy, so if the wife has her MI5 head on, who knows.

Seriously, pretend it broke down, take it to your local computer store and have the HDD replaced if you are really scared. There is a program called Spybot Search and Destroy that you can download free though, and it contains a personal shredder function that writes over the deleted files randomly up to 5 times depending on your security settings. I guess that might be enough for you. To get at the data after that would need some pretty advanced forensic techniques beyond the wit of even the most scorned woman.

MAKE SURE TO GET THE VERSION WITH PERSONAL SHREDDER

Don't respond to Nog's statements- everything here on this board is public. I don't necessarily think you have been plotting treason, picking up priests, puppies or prostitutes, but rather you are just informing yourself. At least, I hope so.

An ounce of prevention, as they say...

Also, I think some of the suggestions to replace the drive are valid. Hard drives are cheap. Back up your data files, re-install your operating system and data on a new drive along with preventative software (prevent worms, key-loggers, etc.) and you should be good to go.

Now here is another PC question for all of you.

I have installed a IE7 version and now my outlook express doesn't connect to sent or receive emails.

Every time I try getting my emails there pops up that screen that tells me to logon enter account name nd pasword (while I enter all in correct) this s***t pops up again.

Any ideas what to do with it? Tried to unistall the IE7 but and reinstal aversion of ie6 but it soesn't seem to be unistalled.#

If anyone knows the hex. value of the IE7 (on regedit) to change , let me know.

Alex,

I also installed IE7 and lost all my tool bars. I simply uninstalled it which included restoration of my prior IE6.

Its a shame when the newer version is so full of bugs that it upsets your computer "harmony".

Wish I knew more to assist you. Good luck.
