Do you have an alarm fitted, sounds like your battery is draining to earth somewhere, Your hawker should be about 14.4 volts when charged fully. I replaced my spark with a hawker last year but found that it was the alarm causing all the problems, and not the battery.

It should be about 14.4V immediately after fully charging it.

After it sits overnight it should drop down and approach the 12.8V.

It does sound like the "immobilizer" may be sucking the life out of it.

Also check to see if current is flowing across the ECU fuse.

When I pull the ECU fuse with ignition off, I get about 10V measuring across the fuse terminals.

This results in the battery slowly discharging.

After about a week it needs recharging....If I did not pull the fuse.

Odyssey, Yuasa, Hawker, Westco and all similar are not good because reverse polarity, not really the right size etc. That is why almost everybody has problems with these overpriced unfit batteries.

Why then not to choose the high quality, IDENTICAL in size and performance and cheapest solution? That is what I did and never lokked back:

Then choose the one on the right, Power Source WP13-12NE Sealed AGM which is made in brand new modern factory by good, hardworking vietnamese (no trade union leaches here) people.

The Yuasa YTX 15L has correct polarity but interferes. Dimensions are 6.875 X 3.347 X 5.125

The MG service replacement Yuasa YTZ 12S has reversed polarity with dimensions of 6.0 X 3.437 X 4.375. It is small enough to avoid the seat rib interference, but may still interfere the seat base towards the front of the bike. Can't say for sure whether that is the case.

The WP13-12NE dimensions are 6.88 X 3.25 X 5.06 with the same polarity as the YTX 15L. In my mind, it is doubtful that the 1/16 shorter height and 3/16 shorter thickness provide sufficient clearance, but I might be wrong about that.

As far as the price is concerned, the YTX 15L cost within a few bucks, and has more capacity, so that's not a significant difference in value.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of unions either, when they get greedy or misguided enough to destroy the companies they work in. However, I would much rather send my money to a democracy that does not summarily outlaw unions, than a communist country where anything can be made illegal at the whim of the dictators that run it, and the punishment for disobedience can be unrestrained.

Communist countries have a consistent track record of unlimited brutality when the power of the central government is challenged. I think it was Macchiavelli that said, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

The Hawker is identical in shape and size to the Spark500 that my bike came with when new.

Length: 6 7/8" Width: 3 1/4" Height: 5 1/8" 12 Ah @ 10hr rate 185 CCA 545 Cranking Amps for 5 Seconds

It is also identical in size and polarity to the:

Power Source WP13-12NE, Universal UB13-12NE ( Yuasa YTX15L-BS ) Length 6.88 in., Width 3.25 in., Height 5.06 in.,

For all you politically correct right wing death to commies types, the UB13-12NE is made in Commie nose thumbing, Taiwan, and is Scura black instead of tasteless orange

UB13-12NE-LG.jpg

Interestingly all of those batteries have higher CLAIMED CCA and AH than the Hawker.

Universal, similarly to Power Source are virtually identical with the stock battery and both are a good choice. All I was trying to say that why would somebody choose a "close but no cigar" and then struggle with problems if there is clear and obvious choice of IDENTICAL product.

All three batteries are identical in size and performance. Power Source being the cheapest is clearly the best choice.

By the way, I can see that PC went up in price just recently, unfortunately. I still bought it for $76 shipped; great battery!

But the Hawker is the most virtually identical to the OEM Spark 500

The only difference on the outside is the color and the labels.

hawker5nt.jpg

Unless we are comparing claimed CCA and AH and vibration resistance, the Hawker Odyssey is identical to the OEM.

From what I can tell, the Spark500 is identical to the Hawker Genesis which does not not have the abuse resistance of the Hawker Odyssey....but yah, the labels are different...

But no doubt, $76 shipped is a good deal.

Hawker Odyssey PC545

$69.99 ++ (which came to over $80 for me.)

Correction: According to Yuasa's website, the dimensions for the YTX 15L BS are that same as those I gave for the YTX 15L, namely 6-7/8 X 3-7/16 X 5-1/8. The only difference is factory prep. Since there is an interference issue, the extra 3/16" width and 1/8" height is important, at least on some bikes. It was with my '04 Sport.

I can't speak for others, but first of all, I'm not sure anti communist sentiments are politically correct these days. The original communist ideals, which included democratic elections, were decent. Unfortunately, when all ownership and control of capital is monopolized by a central government, it has always been the case that currupt dictators work their way into that position, and we have seen what happens. Political correctness has no on my positions. I just don't believe it is good practice or wise to reward autocratic regimes, whatever their political system might be, if I can possibly avoid it. I prefer to help friends rather than former enemies that change their stripes to have free access to our markets while screaming about the defects they perceive our free market system to have.

For all the union bashers out there, just remember that even non union workers can thank the unionized workers for the wages and benefits that they enjoy, since a lot of companies would not be paying what they are paying if it wasn't in fear of the workers organizing and getting certified by a union. The company I work for made 2.06 billion US dollars in 2006 (that is net profit) and paid their CEO 56million US dollars, yet they still don't think that I should make a lousy 10 cents (Canadian dollars= .085 cents US) per hour more for working night shift. Nine years straight nights, no weekends off and mandatory overtime (8 hours a week) as well as mandatory to work on stat holidays including Christmas! My religion as a Roman Catholic doesn't give me even that day off, but if I was of a different religion they would have to bend ass backward for me in fear of me screaming discrimination. I'm a skilled trade person with a red sealed interprovincial ticket with a full apprenticeship (not paid for by the current company I work for by the way) and 16 years of experience under my belt. I don't play in the sick, lame and lazy club and I put in a fair effort at work without ever having been bailed out by my union for beeing a dog fu#$er! I do however stand up for my rights as a worker and for the health and well being of my fellow workers. So if you want to work for $6 bucks an hour in shitty conditions, or you want your wife and kids to work in such conditions than that is your choice. Don't get a job where there is a union.

That gentlemen is my rant for the day! :2c: Thank You very much!

While you guys are arguing over the merits of Union membership, thousands of our best jobs, union shop or not, are being sent overseas.

Meanwhile, the people who own and manage the companies that have abandoned the USA enrich their lives with increased profits and dividends while the blue collar workers that lost their jobs enrich their lives flipping burgers at McDonalds.

I think the american worker has his tit in a wringer and nobody seems to care where the switch is.

Sorry, maybe we should move this portion of the thread to Banter....................

Good points, especially the last one.

If I was a real moderator instead of a proletariat drone spaminator, I would move the last few posts. :thing:

My rant:

We can thank the unions indeed. A very familiar mantra that is about as out dated as the unions themselves.

We can credit the unions partially for some of the benefits. They also need to shoulder the blame for creating their share of a lazy, inferior high priced work force that is now driving manufacturing off-shore. We can also thank the teacher's unions for pre-occupying themselves with indoctrinating rather than educating our youth. It is ecouraging to see folks realizing this and home schooling. It is also refreshing to see thee home schooled kids excel.

Here in Michigan with the highest un-employment rate in the US we need to recall the unions backing of the 1992 presidential candidate who gave us NAFTA as his first major effort when he assumed office. We now have a governor who is getting her second lick at presiding over the largest job loss in Michigan history, fully backed by the unions. Record foreclosure rates, property values plummeting, one of the highest tax rates in the nation and she is getting ready to boost our taxes.

Yep, thanks.... a lot.

You have brought up another problem-the educational system. For example, why on earth isn't an explanation of the various economic systems part of core curriculum. Unless parents teach it themselves, our high school kids graduate clueless about how free enterprise works, how the right to own property, and other aspects of a free economy provide the best living standard in the world, and how advantageous it is against socialism, fascism, and communism.

Meanwhile, remember Perot's "Giant sucking sound" speach on how NAFTA would move jobs to Mexico? Remember Clinton's using executive power to drain our gold reserves and send it to Mexico to bail them out when Congress refused to make more bad loans to them? Remember his speech as he granted China most favored nation trade status to open the floodgates of Chinese imports? Remember how he explained it was a good deal for America because the Chinese were going to import computers and corn from us? Remember the defense secret scandal that gave the Chinese some of our most sensitive technology? Notice the recent Chinese success at the "Star Wars" destruction of one of their satellites? Of course, not all the blame goes to him. The succeeding Congress and administrations have done nothing to stop the bleeding of the American manufacturing base. Hordes still shop at Walmart and other massive importers of Chinese goods, saving money today, with no concern for the effect on the erosion of manufacturing jobs back here.

That ought to stir up the coals of debate- my vote is to keep it going.

I'm all in favor of moving this over to Banter, dlaing, can you do it?
